Post-traumatic disorders

Can post-traumatic disorders affect anyone?

An introduction to post-traumatic disorders

Post-traumatic disorders are conditions that develop during or after a distressing and profound event or series of events that have a lasting impact on a person’s life. These could be incidents that happen directly to the person, or they could be a witness to the occurrences: both have the potential to create a trauma response.

What kind of event a person may find traumatic is dependant upon the individual, but could include childhood abuse, sexual assault, surviving a car crash or a house fire, spending time in a conflict zone, domestic abuse, psychological abuse or a traumatic birth. This is by no means an exhaustive list; trauma triggers will be as diverse as the people who experience them.
