In today's Conservative party conference speech the prime minister confirmed Professor Sir Simon Wessley to review the act with a view to updating the law.

Responding to Theresa May’s announcement, Lord Victor Adebowale, Turning Point's Chief Executive, said:  “This is a positive step forward, and we’re glad that Professor Sir Simon Wessely will be leading the review of current laws.

“Any review though must cover all aspects of mental health including how people from black and ethnic minority communities are treated. All too often they find themselves discriminated against, or detained more frequently than others.

“The right type of support is also needed for people struggling with complex problems, such as a mental health issue combined with a dependency on drugs or alcohol.

“Mental health services can be life-saving. But they must also be equal and fair for all who rely on them.”
