thumbs upA new mental health learning and community hub has opened in the heart of Brighton, which provides a range of services to help people improve their wellbeing.

Situated on Frederick Place, a number of different services can be accessed at the hub including the Brighton and Hove Recovery College, Peer Support services and one to one employment support in the community.

Provided by not-for-profit organisation Southdown, the service is part of Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)’s wider agenda to develop mental health services across the city.

Martin Dominy, head of mental health services at Southdown, said: “Neglect, abuse, poverty, work stress, relationship difficulties and lack of timely access to good services all contribute to poor mental health.

“Our mental health recovery services provide personalised support to people with mental health issues. They aim to maximise hope, independence and resilience so that people can manage their mental health and live their life to the full.

“At Southdown we’re dedicated to supporting the provision of client-led services that are tailored to peoples’ individual needs. The opening of our new mental health learning and community hub will enable us to reach out to more people as well as provide individuals with more choice so that they can choose support that is right for them.”

In April 2013, Brighton and Hove CCG chose Southdown to develop existing mental health recovery day services across the city as well as explore new services aligned to people’s needs. Since then, Southdown has increased the number of people regularly accessing services from 200 to 600.
